Hone & Lap Machinist

Location: Santa Clarita, CA

Job Type: Contract through December 2027

Job Overview

Woodward is seeking experienced Hone & Lap Machinists to perform precision machining and finishing operations on components requiring tight dimensional tolerances and high-quality surface finishes.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up and operate manual and horizontal honing and lapping machines.
• Set up mandrels and select appropriate honing stones and lapping compounds.
• Perform precision finishing operations to meet specified dimensions and surface finish requirements.
• Inspect finished components to ensure compliance with engineering specifications.
• Maintain quality standards and follow established safety procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of hands-on machining setup experience.
• Experience with manual and horizontal honing and lapping is essential.
• Knowledge of mandrel setup, honing stone types, and lapping compounds.
• Ability to work with tight tolerances.
• Experience in aerospace, automotive, medical device manufacturing, or tool-and-die environments is preferred.

Compensation

• Level 2 (3+ years): $34–$43/hour
• Level 3 (5+ years): $37.64–$45.95/hour
• Up to $51.24/hour may be considered for candidates with approximately 15 years of experience.

Shift Details

• Second Shift: Monday–Friday, 3:30 PM–12:00 AM (3 openings; $1.50/hour shift differential).
• Third Shift: Sunday–Thursday, 11:00 PM–7:00 AM (2 openings; $1.75/hour shift differential).

All new hires train on first shift, Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM, for the first three weeks without the shift differential. Overtime is regularly available at time and a half.
